Birmingham Hockey Club 1932 Driving Safer Hockey Across the Midlands

Birmingham Hockey Club 1932 Praised as Sport Welfare Officers Drive Safer Hockey Across the Midlands.

Midlands hockey clubs are being encouraged to make full use of the Sport Welfare Officer (SWO) Network as the region continues to strengthen its commitment to safe, inclusive and sustainable participation in line with the Midlands Hockey 5-Year Strategy.

Delivered through Active Partnerships and funded by Sport England, Sport Welfare Officers provide local support to clubs, volunteers and welfare officers, helping organisations develop strong safeguarding cultures and positive environments for everyone involved in sport.

The SWO Network plays a key role in supporting clubs with safeguarding guidance, training opportunities, policy development and welfare best practice. By working closely with local sports organisations, Sport Welfare Officers help ensure participants can enjoy sport in safe, welcoming and inclusive settings.

A leading example of this commitment is Birmingham Hockey Club 1932, which has received national recognition for its outstanding work during a recent sport welfare campaign. The club was highlighted for its proactive approach to safeguarding, volunteer support, inclusion and player wellbeing, demonstrating how welfare can be embedded throughout a modern community sports club.

The recognition reflects the growing importance of welfare leadership within grassroots sport and aligns closely with Midlands Hockey's ambition to create environments where players, coaches, officials and volunteers can thrive.

Clubs wishing to access support from their local Sport Welfare Officer can do so through their local Active Partnership (link below). The network provides a valuable resource to help clubs strengthen safeguarding practices and continue building positive experiences for all participants.
